Mike Hemme

Highland School District
Assistant Principal
I am entering my 30th year in public education, all in Arkansas. I spent 24 years in the classroom as a secondary social studies teacher before becoming a dean of students and an assistant principal. My experience as a classroom teacher has molded my view of what it is to be an administrator. Of course, one thing has never changed; students come first. I am presenting two sessions this year, the first focusing on discipline and the second on bullying. The interactive referral process is helpful to administrators and teachers in that it provides feedback to teachers, making it known that their concerns are heard and acted upon. This helps build a strong bond between administrators and teachers. The process also assembles data to be disaggregated that unveils useful information to address behavioral matters. In concern to bullying, Act 1029 of 2019 lays out a clear protocol for handling bullying reports - as well as a detailed definition of what constitutes bullying - and the focus of this session is to ensure that administrators are not only protecting themselves and their districts from a legal perspective, but that students are protected.
